Leon, doing well. Up a little late tonight doing some programming. Things going great here in the ME. All the turkish figs I can eat. I work with some turks so they can also bring me the real deal when they return from home. I tried calling u when I was back.. We seemed to have missed each other when I called.

We should talk some time.

Hello, all. I have been fine. I live now in Saudi Arabia part time with work. I left my job in the US for a position here in Saudi. My company even moved all my kids and wife. We really really cant complain, the company has treated us well.

I have talked with Harvey about the mis labeling and I am also A type when it comes to my labeling. I only allow my self to work on one cutting at a time to avoid any confusion. That being said, I have both.. I already promised Harvey some more cuttings once I get back into the states. The pictures taken from here:

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/fig/msg0900345017538.html

were indeed taking from the mother tree and the only cutting and leafs I had in the truck that day. I remember that day well :)

Harvey I can see a close resemblance especially when comparing the fruit to the gardenweb pics.

The Hanc Mathes Atreano from what I remember is also the same that was found at Belleclaires as he gave it to the brothers. Its been a while since I even thought about this topic.

Here is mine from Burntridge. It has a good sweet tasted but we have a hot dry climate.

JD, Please see below. I dont know how I could have messed up the cuttings but if I did (i only have one set of cuttings out at a time and tripe check), I have a stack of Socorro black cuttings in my refer at home i believe so I can send u some additional ones. Im trying to build an orchard made of this variety. I may even have an extra layer.. Paully, you are right, Socorro is a very hot and dry climate so it does great with figs. JD with your climate I can only imagine. Remind me as I will be heading back to the US in a 1.5 weeks. This looks like my Vasilika Sika, almost spot on or my ABQ1BB or Socorro 4. Both are excellent in taste with the Sika having a red interior and the ABQBB having a pink amber color.

Here are my pics of socorro black:

James, Im in and out of the country but I will be back in NM for 3 weeks from end of July to mid Aug as I profession is now in the Petrol Industry overseas. You are more than welcome at my home, and yes, my orchard. James, NMIMT was an excellent school for my wife and I. I have more internship offers and about 5 job offers upon graduation with my first degree. I had the problem that I had tell companies that I had to stop the job search because I didnt have any more time to fly all over the country and interview.. My second degree (my MSci) I had 3 job offers. NMIMT is known for being a good buy and the school is very small so you really dont get lost in the college things, everyone there has very good scores here so it is hard in that most everyone there has excelled in math and sciences.

JD, doing good! I took a job that has me abroad so I havent been able to indulge in my passion. I however now have nearly 3 acres that i am getting ready to lazer level and set up an irrigation system. I hope to get a good 10-30 trees after that.. Good news is that I have more dates than I can eat!

JD, i was just digging thru the forum and came across these again. I have had not had the chance to compare the leaves. My Socorro Black so far has been a great fig and the mother tree was nearly 2 stories tall until an really bad arctic storm caused it to die back about a year ago. The storm even killed our rosemary bushes. Anyways, hope you are all well. Im hoping to grow an orchard of this variety at some point.. A guy can dream!

Here in NM now that we are in the 100s I still only water 1/week with a deep drip system. My trees have lots of straw around them then has made a huge diff in my watering frequency. My nex experiment will be to plant rows of sacrificial corn so between my rows (I have around 150 trees in ground) to cut back on the intense sun. My trees are ok with the heat, its our high-desert sun and winter desiccating winds.

If you can, wait until they go dormant. You could very likely kill all them trying to separate them and if they still have tender roots.

I guess I meant that it is what is on the tree tag, that is why the incorrect translation has, for lack of a better word, propagated.

Subject: A few questions about cuttings Replies: 4

1) At what point do you consider a cutting ready to handle regular room humidity? ie if it can handle X amount of hours out without wilting, it's ready...?

You slowly wean it to room humidity. I have a small bag on mine i poke a small hole, then gradually increase the size of the hole.

2) At what point do you feed your cuttings, and what is your method of choice? What I have handy is 'BioBizz Fish Mix liquid fertilizer', 'Jobes organic fruit and citrus granules'

When there are sufficient roots.

3) Thus far I have NO GNATS (knock on wood)...I am potting up some of my cuttings into 1 gallon containers and using pro mix HP. Would you recommend I isolate these up-potted plants away from my gnat-free cuttings? I did not use pro mix HP for my cuttings in cups.

I dont see any reason to separate them. Over watering kills more cuttings than anything

BTW, I WILL not change the name as mine came from Belleclaires and this is how they named it, regardless of anything else, it is the plant tag from Belleclares.

John, I have changed my methods these days and no longer use  the paper towel method. Now when I root I use a mini hot house then wean the trees out of it. I also now just plant the cutting directly into pots or the ground. Both seems to give great results.

Hungry Jack, have you managed to know if Chris is still in the area? I have a few other friends that were Belleclaires affectionados that were pretty upset with Richie (i think that was his name) after the nursery closed.

Good comparison with Black Madiera, but I have both (lots of Socorro Black) and the BM is not nearly as hardy and I haven't managed to ripen a fig from the BM.

Harvey, what is also funny for me is that most of my Sequoias died while my two of my sierra trees grew almost over 8 feet tall with HUGE branches. No fruit this year though. I may have to keep on the tree with summer pruning.

The Los Lunas has proven itself here out of all my trees. The three that I have planted all have given 2X the crops from previous years from full die backs. Longe D'Out has been OK, but for zone 7 has not proven itself cold hardy here in the high desert.

Herman Col D Damma has been hard for me to ripen with my 2 year old trees. I may have to pinch them. All three variants for me have been great growers. How are you winter protecting them?

How do these compare to Vasilika Sika? The tree has been a very aggressive grower for me and also considered one of the gold standards in terms of taste..
