Subject: brebas, should i pull them off Replies: 4

hi friends,
i have a potted negronne with nice looking brebas
also my italian late maturing celentano has about 17 brebas.
i've heard that by sacrificing brebas the main crop maturity
can be fastened by three or four weeks.
the cilentano has beautiful brebas but never matures figs on
the current years growth and is late maturing what do you think?

Subject: best fertilizer for figs in pots Replies: 5

hi gang,
i like to use organic fertilizers simply for the fact
that they feed slowly and contain many trace minerals.
i also like to keep a layer of compost on top.
and water ever two weeks with fish emulsion and sea kelp.
although i'm not against the use of miracle grow.
although my old italian grandfather would say the more
fertilizer the less tasty the fruit.
well whatever floats your boat.

i've heard people say that by removing the breba crop
the main crop matures faster.
my lattarula has some 40 brebas, which i wont remove.
my king has about 12. but my other figs such as stella, negronne
lsu purple, my italian cilentano and my white sicilian all have
from 3 to maybe a dozen. any advice?

Subject: is lime bad? Replies: 5
Posted By: MARCANTONIO Views: 1,020

hi figsters,
for years i've heard that figs can't get enough lime.
in fact the men at bellclare told me with potted figs
to put a two or three inches of lime as a mulch in
my potted figs, i also mix it well in the soil
before i pot the figs. i've now heard that lime
is not good that it locks up nutrients in the soil.
i potted most of my figs in bumper crop a sort
of superior compost with ground oyster shells mixed in
i added plenty of bone meal and green sand.

what do you think?

the late maturing italian cilentano, hopefully this week
should be the last. what do you think?

thanks maggie and joe,
maggie i would love to move to a warmer climate too
the best would be california so we could grow olives
like in italy. but maggie i'm reluctant to move
because out of this area there are not many italians
and we may find it hard to find fresh mozzarella
and good parma prosciuto.
and imagine a year passing with no feast of ol of mt.carmel.

well i decided march 25th to be the date.

hi maggie and herman
maggie , you know its funny we italians plant things by
saints days , we would plant fennel on our lady of grace july 2cnd
and the early figs that ripened in late june were i fichi di san pietro
saint peter feast being june 29th.
herman the only time  i ever had mold on the fig tree was when i used
leaves that touched the tree itself , i eliminated the leaves and
now used straw but not touching the tree after its wrapped
ipile straw two feet up from the base. also around now
i cut some air holes at the top and bottom in the tar paper to
circulate air. it seems though that certain late maturing figs
do better if you unwrap later. well i think i'll
compromise and do things my tatanonno's (grandpa's) way . march 25th.
when do you think the risk of frost damage is less severe?

hello friends,
i've always unwraped the fig trees in the middle of april
i live on long island, friends have been telling me that is
better to unwrap even earlier, even as early as
st.joseph day march 19th.
my grandfather would say march 25th which is annunciation feast day.
yet even say early may.
i would think year to year would be different.

any advice

henry .
thanks for the tip off, just today i started sending cuttings to
people i promised. i just read his e-mail of weeks ago to me.
he claims he has over 40 varieties.
i don't understand the trickery, if i had extra cuttings
i would gladly give them to a newbie without an exchange.
oh well thank God for honest people.

Subject: too soon to cover long island area? wilt proof any good? Replies: 2
Posted By: MARCANTONIO Views: 1,099

greetings,
this weekend i covered two small new fig trees figuring
their wood was more delicate and some frost might do damage.
however even though we have been through three or more frosts
my insticts tell me to wait maybe another week.
by now i'm usually done.
also has anybody used wilt proof, any good?

  thank you

happy thanks giving,
i have some white delicious italian figs from sicily
and a beautiful dark fig from the cilento area,(suited for potted culture)
by next week i'll prune and will have cuttings.
anyone on long island or the nyc area want to trade cuttings.
i'm looking for any italian , portuguese or greek varieties.
especially if there are any from the naples or calabria areas of italy.
the white figs i have are a nice size very vigorous grower and have a sweet
light pink inside. the dark cilento is to die for but requires more care
and proper pruning.

hi gorgi,
i don't know if this is the same fig,
i could probably tell more by the leaf form
which is very large with very pronounced lobes.
from what i tasted this morning it is up there with stella
and my cilento. it is also an extremely hardy and fast grower.
sure wish i could learn to post pictures.

hi maggie,
i think that a fig from abruzzo might do well in
a  cooler climate. the appenines of abruzzo get pretty cold.
i'm from south of abruzzo from pietrelcina in the province of benevento,
and i can say us inlanders have our share of cold.
any way i wrap my tree with movers blankets, though i give extra care
to the tender tips of the branches buy wrapping them first with a couple
layers of burlap then comes the movers blanket tied above the tips,
i then put a layer of tar paper around the entire tree i've found
bungie cords from the dollar store most useful. then i wrap with a plastic
tarp , i top it with a black leaf bag which i tie down and slit 3 small slits on the very top.
then top with plastic bucket and all around the bottom i place
layers of mulch and straw.
if your in a rural area and you can find corn stalks you can tie them all
around the bark first for extra protection.

hope this is helpful

p.s thanks to jon great site!!

Subject: stella fig 'mm good in 1st year Replies: 4
Posted By: MARCANTONIO Views: 1,977

hi herman,
i have many varieties herman, my italian celentano as i call it,
is almost neck to neck with stella. it is a round dark fig with ridges
with green streaks especially near the tree end it is delicious
and juicy with a more tender skin than stella, but stella is honey sweet
almost candied. i also have sals, hardy chicago, very tasty.
i have a form of very small figs maybe celeste also tasty.
and my friend gave me sicilian white fig which is loaded with un ripe figs
(i dug it up in dec and wintered it in the garage planted it in late april)
my neighbor has the same variety again large and sweet with tender skin.
lattarula was a major producer, but unless cracked and very soft
pretty much overripe, not much taste , like cucumbers.
i've yet to try my desert king, panache and italian cucumber.
some have figs but way too late and they are very young.

any recomendations herman?

hi gang,
last april two barerooted trees arrived at my door
i ordered from greer gardens. i usally never order two of
any variety but something told me to do so.
also never did i expect to harvest any figs the first year.
to my surprise i've eaten 5 so far with about another 10 fattening up.
i can honestly say for  that they are perhaps the best i've ever
tasted. now i believe buying two trees was divinely inspired.
truly a spiritual experience.
i recomend stella to everybody.
