Bass, Thanks for the correct spelling.  I have not tasted these figs.  My friend says the purple ones are better than the brown ones.  I have seen what she calls the brown ones.  She had a freezer bag full in her freezer.  These figs looked bigger than a ping pong ball.  To me they looked yellow green and brown, not just brown.

A friend's grandmother brought two fig trees from her village, Baskinto in Lebanon.  Baskinto is located in the mountains above Beirut.  I was able to get a number of cuttings from these two trees.  One tree is a large purple.  The other is a smaller brown.  I will do trade first for anyone interested in these Fig cuttings.  Any cuttings left I will send for postage.

Luak, I have a Smith that I have had in the ground for several years.  I am in zone 7, maybe zone 7-8.  I have had a little die back in past years.  It is not near as hardy for me as Chicago Hardy.  Smith does produce wonderful tsting figs.  Good luck with it.

Dennis, if you go One Green World's Website you can see what a Vern's Brown Turkey looks like and a little information about it.  This is where I bought my VBT.  I also have a Brunswick fig tree.  The leaves of the VBT and the Brunswick look similar, but to me the fruits are different.  The fruit of my VBT are smaller and redder than my Brunswick.

Hi Thx,

A friend of mine brought me three fig cuttings from Greece last year.  I have a friend that brought me cuttings from her mothers house in Japan.  When she landed in the US she she showed it at customs and said she was not declaring it and put it back in her purse. Nothing else was said about bring it in the US.  I have cruised to Europe and brought back fig cuttings.  When you fill out the declaration papers it says something like you can't bring in flowers, rooted plants, and soil.  It says nothing about bring in sticks.

Put the cuttings in a zip lock plastic bag wrapped in a damp paper towel and put them in your suit case.

I also am allergic to fig leaves like Pete.  My arms were so ad with blisters that they ached and burned at the same time.  I ended up going to the doctor.  He gave me a shot and a perscription for Triamcinoione Acetonide Cream. The doctor said my arm would heal in about four days.  It did work.  I wear a long sleeve shirt and a hat when working with my figs.  If I see any scratches or feel any itching on my arms I rub some of the Tiamcinolone cream on them.

Deer eat the green tips of my fig trees in the winter.  They do not bother the fruit or leaves of my fig trees the rest of the year. My biggest problem is raccoons.  They will strip a tree of figs in a night.  I have a low electric fence around my fig orchard and I set out live traps.

Hi Bill,

Elizabeth came and visited me a couple of years ago.  I eather gave her a  small potted plant or sent her some cuttings I can not remember off hand.
I took a look at Jon's variety list and the pictures he has of the Brown Turkey fig looks like the ones on my tree.

Bill,

I found the original Emma fig tree in Atkins, Arkansas. The tree had been in her family for over 80 years. At the time it was an unknown fig to me and I named it after the owner.  I have gotten many figs off the original tree and one that I started for myself.  I gave a tree to Herman and he is the one that was able to identify the fig.  I was really surprised that it was a EBT, because I have read a lot of negative comments about Brown Turkey figs. This EBT is one of my favorite figs.  I have never done any winter protection to this tree and I have never had any die back.

Hi Sal,

I thought I was the only fig lover with your problem.  The allergy has nothing to do with the figs or the white sap.  It is the contact with the leaves.  When I work with the figs I have to wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt, plus a hat.  I feel like a jerk cutting the grass around the fig trees with winter clothing on, but it is they only way I can get near my figs.  After working with my figs I rub Benadryl gel all over my hands and arms. These precautions seem to work well for me.

Hi Paul,

My Desert King is about 10 feet tall.  After reading your post I think I will give it one more year before cutting it back.  I like the idea of cutting one side back one year and the other side back the next.  I just might do that next year.

Thanks for the information.

CBALDUCC, I got fruit off my Dessert King for the first time this year.  It was loaded with figs this spring, but I only got about ten figs from the tree.  I think the varmits got the rest.  The figs were very tasty. I rooted the Dessert King cutting in the Spring of 2007.

I need to know if I can prune the DK now and still get fruit next Spring?

Bass count me in on your area group meeting.  My parents live in South Jersey.  If given enough advance notice I can go visit them.  I always go to South Jersey in October and will be there for a short time the end of this month to celebrate my dad's 90th birthday.

I have visited Jon, Herman, Ricci, and almost got to see Bass.

Sal, I like your idea of a fig cruise.  My wife and I took a similar one that you took. It was a 17 day cruise to Northern Italy, Barcelona, and Madeira.  I was into figs when I took the cruise and was able to bring back cuttings from Pisa, and Madeira Island.

I also have thought what would happen to my fig orchard if anything happen to me.  My kids do not want them. My wife will not want to take care of them.  When I get to old to live in my house. If I have to move into a senior care facility ( moving in with kids).  I guess I will have to bull dose my fig trees down.  There are not too many people that would want 50 fig trees in their front  yard.  I am hoping I will drop dead and let my kids take care of the bull dosing.

Bass, besides the color can you tell me the difference between the Brooklyn white and the Brooklyn Dark.

I got the bid on a different Brooklyn White on eBay. The check I sent got lost in the mail.  When the guy wrote me and told me he had not received the check I wrote back and said give it another week to see if it is returned  to me or that you get it.  He got mad at me and turned me over to eBay and I had to explain why I had not paid for the tree.  I sent the guy another check.  This one he got and sent me the plant.  He did not package it well and the top of the plant was broken off.  The tree ended up dying on me.  That was the last time I bid on fig trees from eBay without knowing who I am dealing with.

Paully22, I have a Vern's Brown Turkey.  I bought it in March of 2007 from One Green World.  I have gotten a few figs from the tree that I found very tasty.  In One Green World's description of this fig they say that to distinguish this variety from less reliable varieties also called Brown Turkey they named it for their friend and garden writer Vern Nelson.  If you go to One Green World's website you can see a picture of Vern's Brown Turkey and a description of the tree.

Kim, my fig trees are young.  They made it through the winter fine.  The worst thing that could happen to your figs is that they would die back to the grown.  They will come back.  Mine did not die back to the grown and I am in a little cold climate than you.
