the full name of Baud is Pierre Baud. He is a respected and well know grower in Europe. He has written books on the topic of figs and if you are to get something from his collection you can be pretty much sure you got the real variety and not some potential mistake.

if you are in Canada I know that Brugmansia Quebec has the Noire de Carombe and I know the original source and it is a couple of kilometers from Baud and this is a 100% Noire de Carombe.

I called this fig ''Westmount Greek ''vine'' fig

However, I would drop the name vine out of it and keep the rest of the name.

Picture of the original tree the samples were taken from.

The description I wrote about this tree on my page says :

I found this fig tree in the Westmount area of Montreal in May 2009. The owner received it in 1994 from a Greek labourer working for his company. Since 1994 he has been keeping the tree in his basement and when spring arrives he moves it outside in the hopes of enjoying the delicious green figs produced by this tree. The tree has the particularity to grow like a ''vine''. However, the reason for growing in such a way might be related to the fact that it starts new growth while it is stored in a dark area of the basement.

http://figtrees.ca/pictures.html

Looking back at this, I will say that the owner was not taking properly care of the original tree and I remember him saying that he rarely was able to enjoy anything out of it.

Here is the original post I posted when I was giving it out  http://figs4funforum.websitetoolbox.com/post/free-fig-suckers-in-Canada...-3490522?highlight=michal

I said in the video that Italy should not be considered as the craddle of figs but the truth is that such countries as Italy, USA and Turkey invested money into R&D in terms of creating new varieties. So yes the history of the figs is not only about Italy but in terms of quality chances are higher you will be able to buy better quality figs in Italy just because they had more money to do research.

Elin: Albania is a small country so no chance and they have their own production. Montenegro was part of Serbia and before this it was part of Yougoslavia. This is complicated story in terms of history and I prefer to skip this topic as this forum is about figs! The end result is that Montenegro is a small country and looking at other countries around I can only think of Bulgaria and Croatia that have some level of export for figs.

As for caprification it most probable as most fig trees you will find on your way will need it as they are in the wild.

Also, last year I went to Georgia and Armenia and too bad I did not have a video camera on that trip...

Rafed:

I have some new varieties that I got from my trip in the Balkans and this spring I am flying to Georgie (the country not the U.S. state) and Armenia. Therefore, I will probably discover a few more new fig trees.

As for introducing them to North America at this stage I am living in Europe.

rcantor: I think Danny point is also commercial viability and from my understanding is to see how much he can clear off hi stocks. From my discussion with him is to see what is the tipping point for him in terms of how many varieties he can offer.  Probably, if you are interested you can always notify him and he could work on getting this variety.

I do not want to sound like a sell-out for him but my involvement with Danny has been in advising him to get varieties that other sellers such as Adriano, Grimo and others do not have or are not able to easily supply.

Here in Europe and in the U.S.A. there are so many sources to get different varieties but in Canada there is a lack of good suppliers and I hope Danny and others will be able to offer to people in Canada good alternatives for this great hobby.

I am late in the game but I glad to hear that things have been going on with the ''vine fig''. I am guessing I should update the info on this fig since it looks like it is not white. I guess you are right that it was kept on a porch in a shaded area.

I am glad to see that even if I am far away in Europe this fig is still living on!

brebabob: they are harvested and figs are well known in the area. Some grow as wild figs but people also plant them in their yards (as you can see in the last picture).

Bass: I am not sure since I am going to be busy at work. However, there are plenty of occasions at relatively low costs.

For Bosnia the cheapest way (50 Euros for a return ticket) was to do a 12 hours journey via train from Budapest in Hungary to Sarajevo. If I had more time I would made it all the way to Dubrovnik in Croatia but this will be for another time.

Also, one should keep in mind this is a former war zone. When I was in Mostar we climbed a local mountain on the western front of the city and when we got to the top we saw warning signs of mine zones. This made us nervous since we climbed the whole mountain and there could have been anything on the way to the top.

If anyone is curious about the history you can watch this interesting documentary of the siege of Sarajevo.

As promised I am posting the pictures from my trip in Bosnia.

The first ones are from Sarajevo and the second ones are from the historic town of Mostar.

Also, here is a draft version I am currently writing for my website on figs in the Balkans. Once I will complete a spellcheck and add more content I will add all relevant references to the text.

(Keep in mind this text is incomplete)

When most of us think of fig tree cultivation we will mainly associate it with countries such as Italy, Turkey and the state of California in the U.S. Nonetheless, one has to take into consideration the reality of the presence of fig trees in the Balkans and other parts of the world. During September 2010 and May 2011, I had the chance to visit Bulgaria, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and eastern Croatia. In each of these countries, I was able to spot fig trees growing in different areas. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to explore all the countryside areas but in each case I was able to spot fig trees in major cities such as Sofia, Belgrade and Sarajevo.

From a historical perspective, the western Balkan states are bordering the Adriatic sea. In this context, historical data points the introduction of fig cultivation during the age of Illyarians and Greek colonization. Additionally, we should consider the impact of the Byzantine Empire, Ottoman Empire and others as a mean of introducing fig cultivation into the Balkans. Evidently, this is beyond my ability to pull all possible historical data relating to fig cultivation in the Balkans. Nevertheless, one should keep in mind the influence of these former empires as an element of introducing fig cultivation into the Balkans.

The varieties in this region are different and one should not expect to find such fig varieties as Hardy Chicago, Sultane and others. In fact, this region has distinct varieties with their own characteristics.

The first pictures are from Sarajevo

The second part are pictures from the historic town of Mostar

If this is of any help I can tell you that everything will be fine. Just send the cutting via regular airmail.

Do not waste your time sending several packages just send two at the max. In some places in Europe there is no need for doing a custom declaration if the package is under half a kilogram or 1 kilogram...

Hello everyone!

I have been silent for an while and I had a few things that have been happening. First, I should probably change my nick to something like “The_European_Fig”. More explicitly, I am now living in Europe and it means you now have another forum member from Europe.

With all this, I now am restarting my collection from scratch and looking forward to see how this season will go. The good news is am now living in zone with a much more warmer climate. `The fact is that spring has already started since early April and this is way ahead compared to Montreal.

Also, I just returned from another fig hunting trip in Bosnia and Herzegovina. I had the chance to visit Sarajevo and the historic town of Mostar.  When I will have a moment I will post more details.

Kind regards,

Michal

no there are none...

Also, I tend to go for wood that is aged 2 years and more. Yet, I took some that was only a year and was fine.

Also, to make it clear I did not take just a few cuttings to test this out . This was done with a few kilograms/pounds worth of cuttings.

I was just reading Jon's post on the updated section on propagation and this came to my mind...

It has been said that it is better to collect cuttings when trees are dormant and I have been "experimenting" with that notion since some time.

But, I have found that we should not worry too much about that. Since, the last two years, I have taken cuttings of different sizes from fig trees in active growth. Some even have been in the middle of their fig production period.

To this, I did not store the cuttings in a fridge but proceeded immediately to placing them in a bag with wet paper towels.

To me, the results have been positive

In some cases, I just tasted the figs then cut the branch off and removed all leafs and placed the cutting into a bag. Two weeks later nice roots started growing.

Hope this helps anyone...

Bass: I noticed that in Saidnaya and in Damascus they were selling a small yellow fig. I have pics of a tree in Saidnaya that has these figs so this might be it...

I still have to post pics of 2 more fig trees in Saidnaya and then some from Turkey, Bulgaria and Serbia.

Italiangirl74: Thanks! Only one problem is that my HD video camera broke down! I have one video but I was not able to do all the videos I wanted. I might do a video by using the pictures and add some comments about fig cultivation that I found in the region.

Also, while I was in Saidnaya I noticed that they do not hang caprifigs in the orchards. Therefore, my conclusion is that the fig trees cultivated in Saidnaya do not require pollination in general.

for the concerned people in the forum I will reply to your emails once I have a second in the next few days.

First thing I want to thank Bass for this part

I was in a small Christian village called Saidnaya in Syria and I had the chance to taste there some wonderful figs!

so here are my comments in terms of taste

these first 3 pics are of a very sweet fig I tasted and I would give it a B+ in terms of taste

This second tree was interesting because it looked as if it was dead. It was growing next to the first tree (the one on top). However, this tree was alive but I am not sure why it had lost all the leafs. This tree had figs that were highly sweet and I can give it a good A++.

This picture shows the figs from the first two trees. The fig on top is from the tree that had leafs. Maybe the trees were the same but they are not in the same condition... (The figs from the second tree had a dried skin)

this is a view of an orchard...

This tree was great and the figs were of a medium size. Good taste A-

the figs on this tree were big but they all seemed to split. Taste was ok but I was not able to eat a fully ripe one

here is the first part of my experience of fig tasting. This one covers Beirut in Lebanon

the first 3 pictures are of a fig tree I found in the main tourist area close to the clock tower. I have to say, this is the best fig I have tasted so far. It was very sweet and the dried figs I found were great! Evidently, this fig was so good that no other fig has been able to match it. The only issue is that there were guards walking around with M-16 rifles.

The next pictures are also close to the tourist area but these ones are near martyr square. This fig was medium sized and it had a good taste. I did not taste the most ripe ones as birds and other animals had taken care of the best ones. Funny thing, this tree is growing at the end of a parking lot.

More to come...
